The concept of Just in Time (JIT) was created by Toyota Motor Corporations founder Eiji Toyoda and Toyota engineer Taiichi Ohno. The idea of JIT has been very successful for manufacturing organizations that have little to no room for warehousing inventory. When Toyota started their manufacturing company there was not much room to store inventory needed to manufacture the vehicles. When asked where would the parts be stored if there is no warehousing space, Eiji and Taiichi responded that the parts would be at the correct location at the correct time on the production line and no sooner. This became the creation for JIT.
JIT is a program designed to allow these organizations with little warehousing space to time their production right making sure the parts have arrived Just in Time. Just to touch base on a few generic steps of this process; it would include figuring out and scheduling a production run for an item that is being purchased, deciphering what items that are not on hand will need to be ordered, where they are to be ordered from and make this all possible for the part(s) needed to arrive at the correct time and be readily available for the production line.
Many organizations have implemented some sort of pull system that makes it possible to stop the production line if any errors occur and an item is not available when required. After time, once employees understand the concept of the JIT software implemented and have a better understanding of the process, the use of any sort of pull system decreases and may rarely be brought into play.
